The Richeys Arrive in America
What may have brought the Richeys to America? `Threads of Ancestors: Telford- Ritchie- Maze,` by Leila Ritchie contains a letter that explains how some Richeys left Ireland after King William conquered it. They landed in Delaware in 1727. The book `The Richey Clan` says that William Riche came to America in 1763 with his three sons, John, James, and William Jr.

Where does the name `Richey` originate?
The book, `Surnames of Father`s Names,` says: `The love and admiration of the people of England for the adventurous Richard the Lion-Hearted in the latter part of the twelfth century caused many to bestow his name on their sons. The best know surname form is Richardson...Shortened forms are Richey and Richie.` `A History of the Name Richey` says that the name was associated with the English and means `descendant of Richard` and `dweller at or near a small stream.``
